SMG's are my personal favorite gun class. Quick, powerful, and very accurate
when fired from the hip. With these guns you really don't need Steady Aim for the extra
35% hipfire accuracy, though if you choose to go that route you'll hardly ever have to actually aim down your sights. These guns are great for
flanking enemy
positions and hitting them from behind when they least expect it. The best thing about these guns though is that you can strafe twice as fast
as someone with an assault rifle while aiming down the sights, allowing you to both fight and evade at the same time. If you'd like to see some examples of some evasive maneuvers with
SMG's, go to my Video Tips section.
HK MP5
Range: 750 - 1000 (350 - 700 SD)
Accuracy: Medium
TTK: 0.150s - 0.300s
Tier: 1
Ah well finally back to some quality weapons. The MP5 has an extremely
quick TTK, and like all SMG's, great mobility. In cod4, your ability to
dodge and be evasive is just as important as your killing power. So
combine the best of both worlds and that's pretty much what you get with
the MP5. You can't go wrong with this gun. The the only downside to it
is its recoil, which can really throw you off at longer ranges. Overall
though, you can usually find ways to either get closer to the enemy by
moving from cover to cover, or simply retreat if it gets too hot. The
best attachment for the MP5 is the Red Dot Sight, which makes longer
ranges slightly easier while maintaining a good maximum damage range
(750). As an added bonus, the MP5 shares ammo with the M9 pistol, which
gives you an entire extra mag of ammo. If you want a silenced SMG
however, I would recommend the P90 instead.
Skorpion
Range: 200 - 400 (100 - 300 SD)
Accuracy: Very High
TTK: 0.141s - 0.282s
Tier: 4
The Skorpion is a very unique gun, having the lowest recoil of any automatic weapon in the game. The downside is that it's still an SMG, so it does lack
a lot of aim assist that assault rifles have. Don't let the high TTK fool you, take a look at the range first. You'll be doing 0.282s of TTK about 95% of the time,
so this gun is not quite as powerful as some make it out to be. If you're going to use it, you might as well go ahead and put a silencer on it because the range
is awful anyways. The worst part about this gun is the pathetic 20 round mag and a
surprisingly long reload time. This makes taking on multiple enemies almost impossible
since you'll still need 4 shots to kill someone WITH stopping power. I have found however that this gun tends to work best with Sleight of Hand, since you'll need to
reload after every kill just to be safe, but this of course lowers your TTK even further.
The coolest thing about the Mini-Uzi is that it is the fastest firing gun in the game. It's still pretty weak however, especially considering it is highly
inaccurate.
Hitting a moving target from a long distance is almost impossible with this gun even if you burst fire it. The very best perk with this gun has got to be Sleight of Hand.
Unlike the skorpion, you get plenty of bullets in 1 mag, but the fire rate is so high that you'll burn through it in just a couple of seconds, and you'll need it full to
take on multiple enemies. Like the MP5, the Mini-Uzi shares ammo with the M9. This is a very good thing because you'll want to use both the M9 and Bandolier since you'll
be eating up quite a bit of ammo.
I used to love this weapon until I realized how much superior the MP5 is to it. People say they are equal, but even though they have the same range, TTK, and fire
rate, there is still a lot that it falls short on. For one, it has a nasty glitch similar to the AK-47: When you attach a silencer, its hip-fire accuracy gets lowered
to that of an assault rifle. This is far more important than you think, because hip-fire can mean the difference between life and death in close range fights when you
have no time to bring up your sights, or just to catch someone else off-guard. The other problem is that it doesn't share ammo with any other gun in the game, making
bandolier a necessity. Finally, it has a high vertical recoil, making mid-range combat more difficult when you're strafing, which you should
definitely be doing at all
times (see Video Tips). The one thing it has over the other SMG's is that it has the penetration of an assault rifle, but trust me; Being able
to kill an AR user before he can bring up his sights with hip-fire is more important than spraying at a wall in hopes of a lucky kill. Use the MP5 instead, seriously.
The P90 is probably my second-favorite gun in the game. Useful on any map, in any gametype. Though the MP5 has it beat in terms of maximum range TTK, the P90 has a much
lower TTK spread, which means at longer ranges the P90 will do better than the MP5. The best
attachment for this gun is the silencer without a doubt, never trust it with
anything else. The reason behind this is because you should be taking advantage of the fact that it has a very quick minimum damage TTK. This makes the range-reducing
silencer a great choice because you remain powerful and accurate, yet gain the added benefit of being invisible on the radar when you fire. This is a great choice of
weapon when it seems like the enemies are very spread out on maps like Overgrown, which can have you instantly moving from extreme close-quarters indoor fighting to long-range
counter-sniping outside. The incredible 50-round mag certainly doesn't hurt either.
